Children communicate with their environment as soon as they are born. The communication evolves as they learn new skills and reaches new heights as the ability to speak is unlocked. Spoken interaction is a natural trait and with the current development of voice-controlled devices and applications, growingly natural interface for all user segments. There is a lot to learn from the way children try, fail, learn and succeed with new experiences, so what can we learn from their experiments with voice-based interfaces? How might we deliver a digital environment for children to be used mostly with voice? What kind of blending between haptic and voice interfaces could be created for a natural and positive experience? What are the unique value creators, speech-based interfaces can provide compared to other modalities? This project aims to explore the possibilities of voice-controlled interfaces for pre-school children and create concepts where the kids could play with the sounds they make. As a context, we will utilize YLE’s (National broadcasting company) existing Pikku Kakkonen characters and concepts to build on top of.
